A WOMAN who spat in a pub doorman’s eye over a misunderstanding was given a community order.

Jade Elizabeth May Irving, 22, of Chepstow Road, Newport, admitted common assault against Simon Dwyer-Thomas when she appeared at Cwmbran Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

Prosecuting, Mark Salter told the court that at 9.40pm on May 11, Irving and her mother had been smoking outside the Linton pub on Cambrian Road when a doorman asked them to move to the smoking area.

Despite being aggressive they complied, said Mr Salter, but when Mr Dwyer-Thomas was having a conversation about another woman Irving seemed to misunderstand and spat in his eye.

He had said “girls like that disgust me” in reference to someone else, the court heard.

District judge David Parsons said: “Spitting is a grossly unpleasant offence to commit and you are failing to comply with your community order.”

He revoked a previous order for two assaults on a police officer and imposed a new 12-month community order with 12 months supervision for all offences.

Irving must attend 35 sessions of an accredited programme and pay £150 compensation, £85 costs and a £60 victim surcharge.
