A PONTYPOOL man who attacked and racially abused a night club worker was given a 12-month community order.

Adam Haynes, 19, was in Delilah’s night club in Cwmbran with friends on November 9 last year when he was stopped in the toilets by bar worker, Yaya Touray, who suspected he was smoking cannabis.

Prosecutor Rob Simkins, said Mr Touray asked Haynes to hand over the drugs and he produced a small amount of the Class B drug, which he later received a caution for.

Mr Touray, who had started working at the nightspot that night, told him he would have to leave the club and began to escort him outside, Cwmbran Magistrates Court heard.

As they walked downa staircase Mr Touray looked behind him to check he was following when Haynes punched him to the right side of his mouth causing his lip to bleed.

The court heard he called out: “That’s why I punched you, because you’re black. I am going to kill your black family – get back to where you came from.”

He was chased by police who rugby tackled him to the ground.

He was found guilty of a racially aggravated common assault on Mr Touray and of using threatening, abusive or insulting words of behaviour to cause Mr Touray harassment, alarm or distress, following a trial last month.

In a victim impact statement read to court Mr Touray said he was “devastated” by the attack.

He said despite living in Wales since 2004, he now feels like he doesn’t belong in the community and is fearful of interacting with people because he doesn’t know how they will react towards him.

He has not returned to work at the club, which has now closed, and is worried he may bump into his attacker.

In mitigation for Haynes, the court heard he has issues with alcohol and cannabis but had been undertaking courses with the job centre in a bid to better himself.

Haynes, of Channel View, Penygarn, was given a 12-month community order, six months supervisor and must complete 80 hours unpaid work. He must also pay £400 compensation to Mr Touray.
