UPDATE 10.25am: A MAN was taken to hospital following this morning's crash just past the Brynglas tunnels.

Gwent Police said its officers were called to the scene of the crash between a lorry and the Vauxhall Meriva on the eastbound M4.

A spokeswoman said the 43 year old male driver, who was the sole occupant of the car, was taken to the Royal Gwent Hospital as a precaution.

The M4 was temporarily closed while emergency services attended, with the fire service cutting the roof off the Vauxhall to get the man out.

Officials reopened the motorway at 8am.

 


UPDATE 8.43am: The tunnel has now reopened and traffic is moving again.

 


The M4 Eastbound is closed due to an accident involving a single vehicle between J26 A4051 (Malpas Road) and J25A A4042 / B4596 (Newport/Grove Park Roundabout).

There is congestion to J29 A48(M) and emergency services are at the scene of the collision after the Brynglas Tunnel.

Traffic is advised to leave the motorway at J28 and use the A48 Southern Distributor Road to the South of Newport. Trapped traffic in the tunnel is in the process of being released. Diversion: Via A4051 Malpas Rd and A4042 to J25a.
