COLEG Gwent has been declared one of the safest and greenest educational establishments in the UK.

It was recognised because of its ongoing commitment to reduce its impact on the environment and improve its health and safety record.

The college was recommended for the ISO 14001 and BS OHSAS 18001 management standards, after it set up an integrated health, safety and environmental management system across its five campuses.

And it means it is the first college in the UK to hold all four major management standards, having previously been awarded the ISO 9001 certificate and the Green Dragon Standards Level Five.

Replacing existing lighting with low energy bulbs, installing solar panels, a biomass boiler, and recycling all paper, cardboard and plastics were some of the measures the college took to improve its carbon footprint.

As a result, the college was able to reduce accidents by 52 per cent, recycle 86 per cent of all waste and successfully reduce its total energy consumption by 49 per cent compared to figures in 2007.
