A MAN who celebrated his 100th birthday continues to, "take life as it comes."

Aubrey Williams, 100, originally of Pontnewydd, now lives in the Glan-yr-Afon in Fleur-de-Lys, where the centenarian celebrated his recent milestone birthday.

Mr Williams, who has three children, seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, has led an active life.

From 1942 he joined the army as a Chindit, a special force which served in Burma and India.

In 1946 he moved back to Wales and worked as a miner at Oakdale Mine near Blackwood.

By the time he came home home, his daughter, Ann Dimond was three-and-a-half years old.

"My mother said I was a farewell present," she said.

Mrs Dimond, 70, of Blackwood, said her father "very rarely" spoke about his time in the army.

She said up until his 95th birthday her father was very independent but he had since become more dependent and moved to the care home.

For the party Mr Williams' other daughter, Sandra Owen, 66, of Blackwood and his son Terry Williams, 55, of Portsmouth, travelled to celebrate his birthday with champagne and cake.

Mrs Dimond said her father was very pleased to see everyone.

"He always loved working, he is happy and content and still enjoys life and enjoys the company of people," she said.

"He takes life as it comes, he just shrugs his shoulders and says whatever comes comes."
