A SECOND person has died following a crash on the A40 near Abergavenny.

Mary Marshall, 73, of Crickhowell, was a passenger in her husband’s car on Saturday, and had been taken to Nevill Hall Hospital, Abergavenny, with serious injuries, following the collision with another vehicle.

She died in hospital earlier today.

The Argus previously reported how Mrs Marshall’s husband David Marshall, 78, died in the crash.

Mr Marshall had been driving a silver Ford KA along the A40 when it collided with a silver VW Golf, which was travelling in the same direction between Raglan and Abergavenny around 9.30pm.

The 44-year-old driver of the VW Golf, who also suffered serious injuries, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He has been released on police bail pending further enquiries.

Vicar of St Mary’s Church, Abergavenny, Father Mark Soady knew Mr and Mrs Marshall.

He said: "Like David, Mary was a quiet person with deep faith. It’s very sad that both of them should lose their lives in such tragic circumstances.

"We will miss them greatly as a church and as a community."

The Argus previously reported how Father Mark had described Mr Marshall as a "devoted churchman" and a "very quiet gentle man who had given great service to the country in the Royal Air Force."

He said Mr and Mrs Marshall were on the way home from a church barbecue in St Arvans near Chepstow on the Saturday night and had decided to take the scenic route home.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the collision to come forward. They particularly want to speak to the driver of a Ford Transit van, or similar, believed to be travelling in the same direction when the collision occurred.

Anyone with information should contact police on 101, quoting log number 608 20/7/13.
