THE police watchdog's investigation into a fatal Newport shooting will look at previous contact the couple had with Gwent Police in 2013 and the alleged shooter's firearms licence, it said yesterday.

Mother-of-two Caroline Parry, 46, of Croesyceiliog, Cwmbran, died after she was shot on Seabreeze Avenue, Lliswerry, on August 8.

The shooter, believed to be her ex-husband Christopher Parry, 49, is in a stable condition at Newport's Royal Gwent Hospital after undergoing surgery to his face.

Gwent Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident but say they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the shooting. Officers hope to speak to Mr Parry when his condition improves.

The force referred the matter to the Independent Police Complaints Commission, which has decided to independently investigate.

In particular it will look at the contact police had with the estranged couple, who were married for 27 years before splitting recently, in the months before last Thursday's incident.

IPCC Commissioner for Wales Tom Davies said: "This is a tragic incident and a woman has lost her life. We will be arranging to speak to family members and explain what the IPCC will be doing.

"Our investigation will look specifically at three incidents between May-July that the police were involved with to establish how they were risk assessed and how Gwent Police officers dealt with them and whether it had linked the incidents.

"Mr Parry held a firearms licence and our investigation will also seek to establish what police action was taken in relation to his licence for shotguns following the reports of the earlier incidents.

"There is an ongoing criminal investigation into the shooting and while this will take priority the IPCC will progress its investigation as quickly as we can.”

Police say they have had an excellent response from the community but are still keen for more information from anyone who may have seen anything on the morning of August 8.

Anyone who can help is asked to call 101 and quote log 97 of 08/08/13.
