KIND-Hearted volunteers handed out presents to sick children to celebrate the festival of Eid.

The volunteers from the charity Islamic Relief, were at Newport’s Royal Gwent Hospital on Thursday (August 8) handing out small toys to patients in the hospital’s children's ward.

Quasim Anwar, who managed the Newport event said: “We went round with a giant teddy bear mascot so the kids obviously saw the bear first and got very excited.

“It’s traditional on Eid to give gifts or money to people who are younger than you, friends, family,” the 22-year-old from Christchurch in the city explained.

“So we thought this year why not give something back to the community who support our fundraising efforts time after time.

“Normally we raise funds for projects abroad, like the Syria Appeal for example but this year we wanted to support our own community who support us so well.”

The volunteers managed to raise more than £1,000 in just a week to buy the gifts, as well as having around 50 presents donated.

Gifts the delighted youngsters received included things like toy cars, puzzles, board games and comfort blankets for the new-borns.
