NATO summit coming to Newport's Celtic Manor

South Wales Argus: Prime minister David Cameron Prime minister David Cameron

WORLD leaders are set to descend on Newport as a major international summit is due to come to the city, the Prime Minister has announced.

David Cameron said that a summit of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation is to meet at the Celtic Manor Resort in Newport next year.

He had announced that Britain would host the summit for the first time since Margaret Thatcher welcomed NATO leaders at the end of the cold war in 1990.

In September Mr Cameron said: “This will be another important moment in the history of the alliance. It will be an opportunity for leaders to recognise the contribution and the sacrifice made by our service men and women as the ISAF mission in Afghanistan draws to a close, and as NATO draws down its forces and looks to help Afghanistan in different ways.

“The summit will also be about the future of our alliance. Britain has always been at the forefront of shaping the alliance, from its start in 1949 to NATO’s current operations, and the 2014 Summit will be critical in ensuring NATO remains a relevant, modern, adaptable force fit for the 21st century.”

Great news for newport. Let's hope it brings extra revenue in for other businesses in the area. I hope the CM management spruce up the hotel and service, because last time I stayed there it had become more like a 2 star Benidorm hotel, than a 4 star resort.

Look out for a few stray drones over Newport then? What else is NATO for?

Very suspicious activity around the (still half built) Market bus station this morning...at least three guys leaning on their shovels and "plotting a quick brew "...prob undercover Taliban.

Newport is not on the global stage, the Celtic Manor's own publicity says its in the Vale of Usk, not Newport - just the taxpayer picks up the tab for all this again, and then they have the temerity to moan about the National Assembly.

Anything that supports and promotes Newport usually gets a thumbs up from me, but the Celtic Manor Hotel has never really played on its Newport connection - hence the use of Vale of Usk in its PR literature globally.

Why don't you pay a visit to the actual Celtic Manor website and then report back, it avoids the word "Newport" like the plague and highlights the Vale of Usk connection - its called PR, marketing and story telling.

Further, go and check the reviews of the Celtic Manor Resort out on Trip Advisor, and pay particular attention to the Christmas Santa Grotto Farrago of 2012 - I flew 6,000 miles and paid a small fortune to take my family to the dump, basically Cardiff Wonderland is 1000 times better - indeed, I missed out on Usk's annual Santa Parade with lots of Reindeer because of misleading advertisements and PR myths.

I support Wales, I support Newport, but I don't support making a billionaire richer with out taxes, or promoting the Celtic Manor at the expense of Newport.

By the way, you don't work for the Celtic Manner do you, their customer relations is almost non-existent.

After the NATO Summit in 2014, and with all the flow of cash into Wales I'm confident our Chancellor will then take credit fir the end of recession in the Principality - London & the South East get all the money, all the supposed growth driven by house price inflation, and what do we get, a two-day show.

Talk about bread and circuses!!!!!

Cash flow? They won't leave the premises to pop into Tescos. It's in with a limo, out with a limo.

Meanwhile your local police officers WON'T be policing Gwent, they'll just be policing the (sorry) southernmost part of the Vale of Usk.

It may come as a shock to you, but the Celtic Manor Resort does actually reside in the Usk Valley. Note the word resort - not just the hotel. The resort includes the golf course which takes the resort well into the Usk Valley. The Celtic Manor website quite correctly gives its address as the County of Newport. What is wrong with that? Their own Google entry states "Celtic Manor Resort is a golf, spa and leisure hotel and resort in Newport, South Wales". It no more dismisses its connection with Newport than it plays up it's location in the Usk Valley

Your one-sided, knee jerk reaction to this article is due to your own past experience and is lazy and tiresome

Only problem is the people of Ringland face a near total lockdown, the same has happened before, when we have had VIP visits to the Celtic you cannot move for police and security staff asking where you are driving and why. Anyway I suppose it puts us on the map but does not do a lot for the ordinary people of Ringland.
