IT WAS a sell out event as 250 people came to see David Suchet at the Chepstow Drill Hall this afternoon.

Mr Suchet discussed his new book, Poirot and Me, and was in conversation with writer Geoffrey Wansell, before taking questions from the audience.

The much-loved adaptation of Agatha Christie’s novels featuring a Belgian detective played by Mr Suchet will come to an end on November 13 after 25 years.

Mr Wansell said: “This is a celebration of what has come to be a legend- it’s a phenomenon.”

Mr Suchet explained that after he secured the role he read about 20 of the books making notes on characteristics depicted within the pages.

Speaking at the event yesterday, he said: “When I studied the books I was introduced to a character who had never been seen before.

“My reason for being an actor was I always believe that writers without actors do not have a voice. I wanted to be true to the writer and what a writer to serve.”

He brought comedy to the talk explaining how he developed the voice and the walk of Poirot complete with demonstration that had the audience roaring with laughter.

He said: “What strikes me every time is how much people take the character to their hearts.”

When asked about the show coming to an end, he said: “I’m going to miss him, he's been good to me and over 25 years I have got to know him so well that he has become my best friend.

“He has opened doors for films and theatre plays as he has given me a profile. Most of all, I’m going to miss his company.”

Following the talk, fans queued to get a copy of the book signed.

Valerie Mitchell travelled from Newport to meet the actor.

She said: “I have been a fan for a long time, watching Poirot weekly and the repeats. I love his personality and I can’t imagine anyone else playing Poirot.

“Today’s event was great and he explained everything well. It was very interesting, so I’m glad I came.”

Next year, Mr Suchet will be undertaking a world tour with Last Confession, a play about the death of Pope John Paul I, in which he plays Cardinal Giovanni Benelli.
