THE office of the Prime Minister David Cameron has confirmed when NATO will come to Newport's Celtic Manor Resort next autumn.

No.10 Downing Street said the summit will take place on September 4 and 5.

Mr Cameron said: "NATO is the cornerstone of our national security, and has been for more than 60 years. We have no stronger allies and no closer friends than the other 27 NATO members."

More than 60 heads of state are expected to descend on South Wales for the event, which was last held in Chicago in 2012.

Previously No.10 said that disruption would be kept to a minimum for the summit, with the community to be consulted with throughout.

Talks are planned with the Welsh Government and the Wales Office to look into holding events across the region.

Chicago summit organiser Lori Healey has called for people in the two cities to embrace the event, which more than 14,000 people attended in 2012.

Mr Cameron announced that the summit was coming to the Newport golf resort and venues in Cardiff on a visit to Wales earlier in November.
