Fan appeals in hunt for ultra-rare Newport County shirt from Len Ashurst’s testimonial against Manchester City in 1982

A NEWPORT man who collects football shirts as a hobby believes he may have the last remaining shirt from a Newport County game – but hopes he is proved wrong.
Andrew Davies, 30, has Keith Oakes’ shirt from Len Ashurst’s testimonial against Manchester City in 1982. He believes it may be the only one remaining.
Only about 16 were made as a one-off shirt for the testimonial and no replicas were made for fans to buy.
Mr Davies has hundreds of football tops – mainly Newport County – but has never come across another one of these.
“My dad gave me the shirt when I was little,” he said. “This and my one from Newport’s European Cup quarter-final are the most rare.
“I know a lot of people who collect shirts and they’ve never seen or heard of one.”
His dad was given every shirt from the testimonial to use as a kit for his Cross Hands Pub football team. But some shirts were destroyed when a car that was holding the majority of them caught fire on Somerton Road.
“Some were rescued, so there should be some out there,” said Mr Davies. “I’m really curious as to whether there are any left.
“I actually thought that it was a training top until last year as it doesn’t have a Newport County badge on it.
“I’d heard a few rumours from people that it was that shirt, but then I saw a picture from the game and realised it was. It’s much rarer than I ever imagined, so now I am looking to see if anyone else has one.”
