A VISITORS centre in Newport raised £450 by raffling off a watercolour donated by an artist from the city.
The scene of the Fourteen Locks Canal Centre in Rogerstone was donated by artist Alun Edwards.
The money raised will be used to fund the centre’s volunteer programme that will be launched in the New Year. First aid training and T-shirts will be bought for volunteers as part of the programme.
About 45,000 people visited the centre last year.
Tom Maloney, who runs the centre’s education programme, said: “ It has been admired by many, many people and people from as far away as London bought tickets. Alun’s a very talented artist.”
Mr Edwards said he donated the painting because he wanted to help the people who volunteer there. He visits the centre four times a week. It has been a favourite of mine. I’m Newport born and bred.”
The painting was won by Phillip Welsh, from who lives inCrumlin, when the draw was made by Santa Claus and Mr Edwards. Mr Welsh said he was “absolutely over the moon” with his win.
