A FORMER library in Newport has been revamped into a new community learning hub as part of a £6.7 million regeneration project.

The Pillgwenlly Community Learning Academy in Temple Street has been officially opened at the former Pill Library building in the city’s Temple Street.

A mezzanine floor now houses a catering training facility, while training firm Itec is providing courses from new training rooms.

Disability access was also updated as part of the project which aims to provide skills and training opportunities to the community.

The scheme was led by Newport council and was backed by a funding package from Welsh Government.

It is part of the EU-supported Pillgwenlly Regeneration Project, a £6.7 million scheme that has seen the revamp of properities in Commercial Road and the opening up of Mariners Green to link Pill with the city centre.

Welsh Government finance minister Jane Hutt said: “This is another example of the benefits of EU Funds and our membership with the EU.”

Cllr Deborah Davies, Newport council’s cabinet member for skills and work, said: “One of our priorities is to help our residents into rewarding and sustainable employment and we are doing everything we can to provide them with the skills and training they need to do that.”

Hi Great idea, but why couldn't, the Library have had this money spent on it to save the Library assistants and managers loosing their jobs,. Surely the Library could have had been kept open as a learning facility for the community and incorporated with in it a community centre. Jane Hutt has applauded the Centre but did not hear too much from her during Council cuts and the loss of Library and other council jobs with she disassociated herself from for obvious reasons i.e would have dented her popularity i would suspect.

The Council needs to learn that other areas of Newport need attention and not just Pill.

They've made a right dog's scrotum of Mariner's Green. Whoever designed that road layout needs the sack along with the idiots who agreed it.
Clearly the grey matter does not work for them.

Whatever happened to the Pill Millenium Centre?

Was this not suppossed to be the hub for Pill?

Typical Newport Council chucking money at new projects to look good, How about supporting a project to keep it going for years to come.

Anyone noticed the state of the Footbridge and The Riverfront, typical no maintenance to keep them clean, show a little pride NCC and spend OUR money wisely
