ARGUS ARCHIVE: 50 years ago - George Street Bridge opens

First published in News

The new £2 million George Street Bridge was officially opened by the town mayor, councillor Trevor Vaughan, marking the culmination of a 17-year-old dream.

The workers who built the bridge were each given vouchers for seven pints of beer which they could spend in nearby pubs which had been given special extensions for the occasion.

The Argus printed a special supplement to mark the occasion:

And you have to remember that the M4 wasn't open at that time so before this bridge was opened all traffic heading east or west through Newport was going via the old town bridge and through the town centre.
How times have changed in those 50 years.

Is there any chance that the Argus could provide the supplement as a PDF dowload from this site so that we can read it properly?
It looks very interesting but unfortunately can't be read in its curent form.

I remember reading somewhere that the original planning permission was turned down as it wanted 6 lanes of traffic lol.
Would be lovely to read the above supplement x

And I was in Coverack Rd as a young boy where half of Morris St became empty almost over night it seemed. The noise of the pile drivers was over powering at times but it was a great adventure for a load of us kids. You feel old? Me too !! :-)
