THE third annual fancy dress walk in memory of a Newport lifeguard in aid of St David’s Hospice is set to take place next month.

Steven Lewis, 31, died on December 21, 2011, after being diagnosed with stomach cancer.

The fancy dress walk from Charles Street to The Ship Inn, Caerleon, will take place on Monday, May 26.

The last two years have seen dozens of people turn out for the walk in their best fancy dress, from the Queen and Rocky to a Dad’s Army soldier and the Mario Bros.

The three-mile walk will start at 3pm at the bottom of Charles Street and will make its way through Commericial Street, into Bridge Street and Cambrian Road, through the High Street, walking across Newport Bridge before walking along Caerleon Road to the Ship car park.

Steven’s mum Jackie Lewis, from St Julian’s, told the Argus they are hoping the walk will help them reach their £25,000 target.

She said: “Before their round the world bike ride for cancer research Ryan Farley and Rob Shipley will be starting the walk and testing our fitness to see how many times they can lap us before we arrive at the ship.”

Mrs Lewis has prepared sponsor forms for anyone who wants to take part, but added: “We understand sometimes if you do a lot of fundraising it can be difficult asking the same people for money all the time, so this year we thought it would be nice to say if you don’t want to collect sponsorship, you can still take part and help St David’s for a small donation of £5 per family.”

There will also be prizes for the best fancy dress in the male, female and children’s categories.

She said: “We are going to have a banner this year. We are currently on £23,000, which is so amazing.

“We are hoping for a good turn out this year – it’s a really fun event suitable for all the family, and it’s for a wonderful cause. Everyone is welcome.

“As we have already funded the new water fountain at St David’s, I am hoping our next buy will be a beautiful bench to go next to it, so patients and their families can sit there.”
