GWENT’s new High Sheriff has been sworn in at a ceremony in Newport.

Gillian Ann Sheddick OBE, 65, will take up the post for the next year, replacing Murray MacFarlane who served for 2013/2014.

The declaration of office took place at The Orangery at Tredegar house yesterday afternoon.

Mrs Sheddick said: “I’m having it at Tredegar House because I used to go to school there as a boarder.”

A couple of the sisters from the then convent school were at yesterday’s ceremony, where Mrs Sheddick had to make a declaration written on behalf of the Queen.

Over the next year, Mrs Sheddick said she hopes to raise the profile of Gwent’s voluntary sector. The role also involves working with police and the judiciary.

Mrs Sheddick, from Redwick, Magor, who has lived in Gwent all her life said: “You get to meet and see a lot of people you wouldn’t normally come across. It’s a very interesting and rewarding job.”

Mrs Sheddick was awarded an OBE 10 years ago for enterprise and training in Wales.

The mother-of-two has five grandchildren who were at the ceremony with two of them acting as sword bearers.
