ARGUS ARCHIVE: 25 years ago - Newport 'one of worst places to live in Britain'

First published in News

A massive manhunt for a fugitive gunman ended when the man walked down from Twmbarlwm mountain into Fairwater, Cwmbran.

Labour leader Neil Kinnock officially opened the new Woodfieldside Business Park at Blackwood as well as a new £300,000 baking facility at Brace’s Bakery.

A reputation for violence had left Newport trailing near the bottom of a new league table of best towns and cities in Britain in which to live.

It was claimed that Blaenau Gwent Borough’s low uptake of childhood vaccinations could be placing children at risk of severe handicap or even death.

Nothing has changed then, it is still the worst place in the world to live, in fact I think it was a lot better 25 years ago, I am just glad that I no longer live in Newport and I moved to the outskirts.

Nothing has changed in my view. Newport has a reputation of being a violent, drug riddled, run down dump. That's what Labour has done to the place and nothing will change whilst they are in charge. I moved out of there years ago and will never return.

Me too and I hope the door didn't hit your fat backside on the way out.

I liked living in Newport 25yrs ago - Maindee was a nice place to live - there were banks, food shops, electrical goods retailers and even a pet shop! and of course not forgetting a fantastic swimming pool. Now look at it - a dump.

Sounds like something that would have happened in the days of the wild west - were the Welsh equivalents of Wyatt Earp and Doc Halliday there to receive him? lol:)

So the Labour councillors are all sat there up the civic rubbing their hands together and sniggering at their secret plan to make Newport a dump so that they get voted in next time? Seriously?
