School backs Pontypool museum’s £19k campaign

A “WONDERFUL resource” is how a Pontypool school teacher has described Pontypool Museum, as the venue continues to increase its membership.

The museum has set a target of 1,000 new members to help make up the £19,000 cash shortfall in its budget.

Encouraging local residents to sign up are teachers at Pontymoile Primary School.

The school’s year six teacher, Charlotte Kembrey, said: “We have always greatly enjoyed our trips to Pontypool Museum. The sessions have brought history to life for our children and greatly enhanced their learning.

“We are very sorry to hear that this wonderful resource is under threat and we encourage people to join as members.”

In October, the primary school pupils were transported back in time at the museum, during a workshop that aimed to bring life of the 1940s home front alive.

Previously, both the year five and year six pupils had been learning about the war in the classroom.

Speaking about the experience, Ms Kembrey, said: “At the museum the pupils were fully engaged as they realised just what life was like at home during the war.

“They really enjoyed the visit as it brought it to life for them.”

The children were greeted by characters each with their own story to tell, including a mother whose son was killed and a man on the home front.

Through them, the pupils learnt about wartime food and clothing rations, the land army and being safe during an air raid.

Pupils then become evacuees and joined the Home Guard.

Pontypool Museum membership fees are £15 per year or £20 for a family. Business, institution or club fees cost £60.

Gift aiding is available and gives the trust an extra 25p from the Government for every £1 donated.

Membership benefits include free entry to all exhibitions, 10 per cent off selected items in the museum shop, exclusive invitations to special events and exhibitions, newsletters featuring upcoming attractions and trust news, and voting rights at the trust AGM.

Corporate members receive promotion in newsletters, on social media and on the website.
