WORK to build a new school in Blaenau Gwent has begun.

The new Abertillery Primary School is being built on the site of the existing school as part of Blaenau Gwent Council’s 21st Century Schools programme. It is due to open in autumn 2016.

Pupils will continue to be taught at Abertillery and Blaentillery Primary School’s before enrolling at the new building in two years’ time.

Willmott Dixon has been awarded the contract for pre-construction works.

Bethan Guilfoyle, chairwoman of the education recovery board, said: “In Blaenau Gwent we have fully embraced the Welsh Government’s 21st Century Schools programme and its vision to improve the school estate and raise educational standards across the county borough. Blaenau Gwent’s 21st Century Schools programme will result in an investment of £20.25 million between 2014/20.”

Dean Taylor, who is head teacher of both schools, will remain in charge of the new building. He said: “We are very excited about the new school which will give our children the modern and vibrant learning environment they deserve.”
