STEEL-MAKING jobs at Newport's Llanwern will not be hit as part of Tata's plans revealed today which will see around 400 jobs go at their Port Talbot plant.
Tata says the 'restructuring' will improve the competitiveness of its South Wales steelmaking business.
Karl Koehler, Tata Steel’s European chief executive, said changes were "vital if the firm was to build a competitive future for our Strip Products business in the UK."
He added they are currently investing in their hot strip mill in Port Talbot and they have upgraded their galvanising line in Llanwern.
Roy Rickhuss, Chair of the UK trade unions' steel committee which is made up of the Community, Unite and GMB unions, said: "We are obviously very concerned to hear this news and we will do all we can to support those affected by the announcement.
"We will be seeking an urgent meeting with the company to discuss our concerns about manning levels and reiterate our opposition to any compulsory redundancies."
Tata employ 600 people at Llanwern and 350 at the Orb Electrical Steelworks.
