POLICE officers in Newport are asking residents to be vigilant following a number of burglaries in the area over the last week.

Since the beginning of September six burglaries have taken place in Maindee and St Julian’s and nine burglaries have been carried out in the Alway, Liswerry and Ringland areas.

Gwent Police say some of these burglaries could have been prevented by locking and securing windows and doors.

Neighbourhood Sergeant Emma Smith said: “I’d urge all local residents to check and double check the security they have in place.

“Always make sure your doors and windows are locked before heading out and contact us if you see any suspicious people or vehicles in your area.

“Burglary and Crime Prevention Information Packs are available from Maindee and Alway Police Station Enquiry Offices.

“Maindee office is open from Monday to Friday, 9am until 5pm, and Alway office on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 1pm until 5pm.

“Come along to collect a pack for more information and advice on keeping your home and property safe.”
