NEWPORT City Council is hitting the road in a bid to collect as many residents' opinions as possible before putting together next year's budget.

The council has already cut £50 million with a further £25 million savings identified over the next three financial years.

The Argus reported in June that councils across the country could face a grant reduction from the Welsh Government of 4.5 per cent next year, a much greater figure than the 1.5 per cent previously proposed.

Officers have been working towards a 4 per cent reduction which could mean Newport City Council would need to find a further £8 million savings for 2015-16 Newport residents are being given the chance to have their say on the services that are important to them at pop-up consultation events throughout Newport.

council representatives were at the Newport Centre yesterday.

Residents will be invited to fill in a questionnaire to show which services matter most, how they think the council can do things differently to save money and how the community could get more involved.

The next sessions will be held on October 13 at the Active Living Centre from 4pm to 7pm, the Newport Information Station on October 16 from 10am to 2pm and the Riverfront Theatre on October 22 from 11am to 3pm.

A session will also be held at the Newport Retail Park at a date yet to be confirmed.

A public consultation on the full budget proposals for the next financial year will start in December 2014 and end in January 2015.

Residents can also fill in the questionnaire online on the Newport City Council website.
