AN operation to tackle unlicensed taxis in Newport City Centre saw three vehicles taken off the road on the weekend.

Gwent Police officers ran the operation alongside the Special Constabulary, Roads Policing Department and Newport City Council licensing department to stop and check more than 50 taxis in the bus station in Newport on Friday, October 3.

Officers also checked road worthiness of the vehicle along with the driver’s documentation.

A number of drivers were given notices to make sure defects on their vehicles are fixed and made safe.

Newport PC Paul Kostic said: "This was a successful operation with the majority of drivers and vehicles being safe with the relevant documentation.

"The operation was met with positive feedback from the drivers themselves and also their passengers. Many thanks to all for their support and co-operation throughout."
