THE red carpet will be rolled out today for the much-anticipated launch of Newport’s Monopoly board.

A gigantic replica of the family classic board game will be unveiled later this morning at the Celtic Manor to mark the occasion, which will be officially known as ‘M Day’ throughout the city and put Newport on the Monopoly world map.

The red carpet will be laid out to reveal the five foot square board along with some giant dice and top hats.

The game, announced at the same time in February it was announced September’s Nato summit would be held in the city, will be officially launched by London games maker Dan Taylor along with the mayor of Newport, Cllr Matthew Evans, and Celtic’s Manor’s chief executive Dylan Matthews.

The Argus also revealed how current Miss Teen Beauty of Newport, Elle Wilks, 14, was chosen alongside eight-year-old Megan Sweet to be VIP’s at the official launch following a competition and will have the honour of playing the first game on the Newport Monopoly Board alongside the Mayor of Newport.

The Argus has been chosen for the coveted Fleet Street square - and game makers declared the decision a “no-brainer”. We were given a sneak preview of the board yesterday, and can reveal some of the sites.

Last month, Dan Taylor, from makers Winning Moves UK said: “We are delighted to announce that the Argus will be taking over the Fleet Street site that is the traditional and now spiritual home of the UK newspaper industry.”

The Newport Transporter Bridge, Friar’s Walk, The Celtic Manor, and Newport Retail Park are just some of the city attractions which have replaced the famous London streets as squares on the board.

Other organisations including Age Cymru Gwent and The Ieuan the Lion Memorial Fund, the charity of Newport boy Ieuan Yendle, who died aged 13 after a brave fight with an undiagnosed illness, were also chosen.

All 22 Newport landmarks, which will replace the famous London streets, will be announced today after thousands of Newportonians voted for their favourites.
