MORE than 100 schoolchildren from across Torfaen visited the Garn Lakes Local Nature Reserve on Friday to discover more about their local environment and heritage.

Pupils from Blaenavon Heritage VC School, Ysgol Bryn Onnen, Garnteg Primary School and George Street Primary School, had a go at pond dipping and mapping local wildlife, learnt how to make fires using flint ,and helped to carry out a scientific survey of the Coity tip.

They also helped care for the nature reserve by litter picking with Keep Wales Tidy.

The event was organised by Natural Resources Wales and Torfaen council as part of the Welsh Government’s Plant! initiative which encourages children to learn more about the natural environment, and has also planted a tree for every child born or adopted in Wales in the last six years.

Earlier in the year pupils from Blaenavon Heritage created a new woodland area at Garn Lakes. The leader of Torfaen council, Cllr Bob Wellington, said: “This is a fantastic project.”
