The Newport edition Monopoly game was officially unveiled today .

A gigantic version of the classic family game was put on display at the Celtic Manor this morning to mark ‘M Day’ throughout the city and put Newport on the Monopoly world map.

The Argus was there for the unveiling after announcing last month that we had been chosen for the coveted Fleet Street square after game makers declared the decision a “no-brainer”.

Newport Transporter Bridge, Friars Walk, The Celtic Manor and Newport Retail Park were also the 22 landmarks voted to feature on the board by thousands of Newport people.

Mayor of Newport, Councillor Matthew Evans officially launched the game alongside two VIP guests, current Teen Beauty of Newport Elle Wilks, 14 and eight-year-old Megan Sweet.

Cllr Evans said: “It’s been an incredibly exciting day today people have been talking about this for months and the fact that now we are well and truly on the map having our own Monopoly board is fantastic.”

Elle Wilks and Megan Sweet were both excited to be a part of the launch. Elle said: “I’m really excited to be here, it’s an amazing opportunity and I adore Monopoly.” Last month two charities, Age Cymru Gwent and The Ieuan the Lion Memorial Fund, the charity of Newport teen Ieuan Yendle, who died aged 13 after a brave fight with an undiagnosed illness, were also selected to appear on the game.

Wayne Yendle and Rosemary Yendle, parents of Ieuan were invited to the launch. Mr Yendle said: “It is actually an honour to be chosen to be on the Monopoly board.”

“For our small charity to be on it is an overwhelming feeling and great comfort for me and my wife Rose.” The Monopoly Newport Edition went on sale at exactly the same time as the launch and is now available from all leading stores, including Waitrose, Waterstones, WH Smith and The Works, as well as online at amazon.co.uk.

Rosalind Lee was at the launch with husband, Gerald after her picture of the Kingsway Centre in Newport was chosen for the board. She told how "it was very exciting to see my photograph on the large board and to meet the Hasbro representative and shake hands with the Mayor", adding "I had a great time".
