LAST week pupils from Newport High School tried their hand at making Lego robots when they joined thousands of other pupils from across South Wales at SkillsCymru in Cardiff.

The pupils attended the event at the Motorpoint Arena, along with 5,000 other pupils from 64 schools across South Wales, to get a taste of the exciting variety of career opportunities available to them across the country.

From mixing a “mocktail” to acting out an RAF mission, pupils were given the chance to participate and speak with a variety of employers including those from medicine, teaching, tourism and catering.

Ellis James, aged 13 from Newport High School said: “The whole day has been a real eye-opener. I honestly didn’t realise just how many different kinds of jobs were out there and also how important it is to explore all of the options and consider things like apprenticeships.”

“The day has been really helpful and I’d definitely recommend it to anyone struggling to decide what they want to do.”

Pupils from Abersychan Comprehensive School, Bassaleg School, Blaenau Gwent Business Resource Centre, Llanwern High School, Oakdale Comprehensive School, Rhymney Comprehensive School, St Alban's RC High School, St Julian's School and Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni also attended.

SkillsCymru is part-funded by the European Social Fund and supported by the Welsh Government and Careers Wales.
