NEWPORT City Council is waiting for the Welsh Government to decide whether it will be reimbursed for more than £46,000 spent on operational costs during the Nato Summit.

A report submitted to the cabinet shows that the council has made an application for £46,581, which was spent on facilitating the protest march and peace camp.

The city council has yet to receive a confirmation or rejection from the Welsh Government but the report states that despite direct written requests to Welsh and Central governments, there were no guarantees of reimbursement of costs.

Newport hosted 67 heads of state and 120 ministers of defence and foreign affairs at the Nato Summit, including Barack Obama, Francois Hollande and Angela Merkel, which took place on September 4 and 5 at the Celtic Manor Resort.

Ten thousand support staff, 2,400 accredited delegates, 2,000 unaccredited delegates and 1,800 media were also in attendance.

Newport City Council incurred the additional costs hosting a controversial week-long peace camp held at Tredegar Park as well as a 1000-strong protest march through the city held on August 30 and 250-strong protest on September 4.

A lively public meeting was held in August as protesters had provisionally booked Pill Mill for their peace camp activities before the venue was changed to Tredegar Park with Newport City Council agreeing to source toilet, water, waste and cleansing supplies and services.

The report adds: "Many of the council’s involvement within the Nato Summit preparations fell within existing statutory obligations. It was therefore determined that only additional costs should be recorded. These additional costs primarily related to the operational response costs of the protest marches and the peace camp."

The Welsh Government has been contacted but no response was received by the time the Argus went to Press.

To continue the Nato Summit's ongoing legacy, two events will be held at the Celtic Manor this month.

On November 7, the council will be hosting a second Newport Summit to examine the progress of the city's regeneration and on November 20 and 21, an international investment conference will be staged.

Cabinet members will discuss the report at a meeting on November 10.
