A MUSICAL celebrating the 175th anniversary of the Chartist movement will be staged in Newport today (THUR) before going on tour in Monmouthshire.

The Forgotten is a musical theatre piece that draws on stories, songs and poetry from the characters and communities that played a crucial part in democracy for the region during the Chartist period.

The play presents factual events about the Chartist Uprising in 1839, drawing parallels between the problems of the mid-19th century and today.

The music was created by award-winning television composer Justin Nicholls and the libretto was co-written by playwright Patrick Jones and theatre director and writer Vanessa Dodd.

It is being directed by theatre director Chris Durnall with a professional and community cast, supported by the Singing Clubbers led by Chepstow singer Karl Daymond.

Today’s performances take place at The Riverfront Theatre at 2pm and 7.30pm. The production then moves to Llandogo Village Hall at 7.30pm on November 22, The Drill Hall, Chepstow at 7.30pm on November 27, The Savoy Theatre, Monmouth at 7.30pm on December 5. Tickets are £10, £8 concessions and £5 school students from the Box Office of each theatre.

The production is supported by Newport’s Community Arts Development Fund and The Arts Council of Wales.
