GWENT Police is bucking the national trend after fewer transphobic hate crimes were recorded in 2014 than in the year before.

The force said it recorded three gender identity crimes between January and November, compared with seven in 2013 and one in 2012. The crimes included assault, harassment robbery and criminal damage.

Scotland Yard recorded 95 transphobic hate crimes between January and November, up from 66 in 2013 and 59 in 2012.

Crimes this year included 53 harassment offences, 17 common assaults, seven grievous bodily harm (GBH) offences and seven assaults with injury.

Rape, robbery, criminal damage and burglary were also recorded, according to figures released by the Metropolitan Police.

Avon and Somerset Police recorded 38 transgender hate crimes between January and November, up from 22 in 2013 and 12 in 2012. They included 43 harassment offences, 15 assaults and an arson offence over the last three years.

Merseyside Police recorded 32 hate crimes which were as classed as transphobic or motivated by a person's gender between January and November - double the number of offences reported in the previous year.

The force recorded 16 transphobic or gender identity crimes in 2013 and 10 in 2012.

Among the crimes recorded since 2012 were 39 harassment and public order offences, 13 assaults, three criminal damage offences, two robberies and a rape.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) recorded 25 transphobic hate crimes between January and November, up from 16 in 2013 and 16 in 2012.

Crimes included assaults, criminal damage and public order offences.

Nottinghamshire Police - which provided figures covering both transgender hate crime and offences motivated by a person's sexual orientation - said 67 offences were recorded between January and November, compared with 61 in 2013 and 47 in 2012.

South Wales Police recorded 23 transgender hate crimes between January and November, up from 20 in 2013 and 11 in 2012.

Durham Police recorded seven transgender hate crimes between January and November, up from one in 2013 and three in 2012.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) said eight transphobic hate crimes were recorded in 2013/14, up from six in 2012/13 and three in 2011/12.

Kent Police recorded 14 transgender or gender prejudice hate crimes between January and November, up from nine in 2012 and seven in 2012.

Norfolk Police recorded nine transphobic hate crimes between January and November, compared with one in 2013 and nine in 2012.

West Mercia Police said 12 transphobic or gender identity hate crimes between January and November, up from 11 in 2013 and 10 in 2012. They included five assaults, harassment, criminal damage, causing public fear, alarm or distress and a sexual assault.

Northumbria Police recorded nine transphobic hate crimes between January and November, up from two in 2013 and five in 2012. They included an attack involving a gang of three people who pushed the victim to the ground and kicked their body, an assault in a shop and incidents of verbal abuse.

Gloucestershire Constabulary recorded five transphobic hate crimes between January and November, up from four in 2013 and one in 2012.

They included a victim who was spat at in the street, another person who was assaulted and a transsexual who received abuse on social media.

North Wales Police recorded seven transphobic hate crimes between January and November, compared with seven in 2013 and 11 in 2012.

Crimes this year included a sexual assault on a boy aged over 13, harassment and five offences of causing public alarm, fear or distress.

Elsewhere, West Midlands Police recorded 17 transphobic hate crimes between January and November, compared with 23 in 2013 and 10 in 2012.

They included 22 violence against the person offences, 18 public order offences, six crimes involving arson or criminal damage, two sex offences, robbery and a vehicle offence.

Suffolk Constabulary recorded 16 transgender hate crimes between January and November, compared with 23 in 2013 and 24 in 2012.

They included a group of children aged seven to nine who verbally abused a victim, derogatory comments on social media, a rock used to smash the sunroof of a victim's car and an assault using a blunt object.

Thames Valley Police recorded 16 transphobic hate crimes between January and November, compared with 46 in 2013 and 28 in 2012.

They included 19 theft offences in 2013, the force said.

Devon and Cornwall Police recorded 13 gender identity hate crimes between January and November, compared with 17 in 2013 and 15 in 2012.

West Yorkshire Police recorded 15 transphobic hate crimes between January and November, compared with 17 in 2013 and seven in 2012. They included criminal damage, violent crime, burglary, sexual offences and other theft, the force said.

Cheshire Police recorded five transphobic hate crimes between January and November, compared with 19 in 2013 and nine in 2012. They included 19 public order offences, 11 assaults, a sexual assault on a male aged 13 or over and two criminal damage offences.

Essex Police recorded 17 transphobic hate crimes between January and November, compared with 28 in 2013 and 31 in 2012.

Leicestershire Police recorded 21 gender identity crimes and incidents between January and November, compared with 29 in 2013 and 21 in 2012.

South Yorkshire Police recorded three transgender hate crimes between January and November, 12 in 2013 and one in 2012. They included an assault on a victim who had a brick thrown at them in the street and another attack where the victim was punched in the face after having their wig and earrings pulled off.

Another incident saw a brick thrown through the front window of a house and another victim was sent messages on Facebook and Snapchat urging them to take their own life.

Lincolnshire Police recorded three transphobic hate crimes between January and November, seven in 2013 and five 2012.

The offences including two incidents where victims were spat at and verbally abused and another where transphobic graffiti was sprayed on a house.

Cumbria Police recorded three transgender hate crimes between January and November, four in 2013 and two in 2012. They included four assaults and five offences of causing public fear, alarm or distress.

Bedfordshire Police said three transphobic hate crimes between January and November, three in 2013 and one in 2012. Among the offences were damage to vehicles and a property, verbal abuse and a physical assault.

Derbyshire Constabulary recorded three transphobic hate crimes between January and November, four in 2013 and seven in 2012. They included assaults, verbal abuse, criminal damage and robbery.

Hampshire Police said 29 gender identity crimes were recorded in 2013 but did not provide figures for 2012 or 2014.

Surrey Police recorded eight gender identity crimes in 2014 and one offence in 2013. They included alleged harassment offences, an assault and criminal damage.

Cambridgeshire Police has recorded two transgender hate crimes between January and November, compared with two in 2013 and three in 2012.

Cleveland Police said four transphobic hate crimes were recorded between January and October, compared with seven in 2013 and five in 2012.

Warwickshire Police recorded three transgender hate crimes in 2013 and one in 2012. No offences have been recorded so far this year.

Wiltshire Police recorded two transphobic hate crimes in 2013 and one in 2012. All involved discriminatory remarks and no offences had been recorded so far in 2014, the force said.

Dyfed Powys recorded three transphobic hate crimes in 2013 only.

Humberside Police said two hate crimes in 2014 had been flagged as transphobic offences.

Police Scotland said it was unable to provide figures on transphobic hate crime.
