NEWPORT-born great-grandfather-of-six Fred Chambers recently celebrated his centenary surrounded by his family.

Mr Chambers, a former Alcan worker, was born in Bolt Street but spent much of his life in Pill before moving to The Gaer in 1950.

The father-of-two married his late wife Flo (nee Tayor) in St Michael’s Church, Newport in 1940 and took his first job as a labourer at Black Lawson International before moving to Alcan as a furnace man until his retirement.

A devout Catholic, Mr Chambers was a member of the Catholic Young Men’s Society and the St Vincent de Paul Society.

He was a keen member of Newport Chess Club and ardent supporter of Newport County Football Club.

Mr Chambers relocated to Staffordshire five years ago to be close to his daughter and lives at St Mary’s Nurising Home in Stone.

His son Malcolm, 72, who was at the celebrations on January 11 said the secret to his father’s longevity is that he always finishes his plate at meal times.
