A CALDICOT cheer group have tumbled their way to become Welsh champions.

The Galaxy Cheer junior team, which trains at the Wye Gymnastics Centre, Portskewett, have won the ICC Welsh Open in Newport and are now training for a bigger competition in Exeter. The group of 18 girls between eight and 15-years-old took part in the competition on January 17 which included a routine full of tumbling, jumps, stunts and dance.

They beat off competition from three teams to become the junior level two champions at the Newport Centre.

Danielle Pike, 23, cheer coach, said: "This was our first competition this season - it's great to have won. We've done about two or three competitions before but never an ICC competition.

"The other teams included the Cardiff Central Cougars who have been going a long time so it's quite a big deal that we did that."

She added: "We have been going for nearly three years now. We welcome members of all abilities -the first girl to start was a five-year-old who had never danced or taken gymnastic lessons before but is now a great dancer and won her school dancing competition."

The squad are now training for their next competition which takes place on February 28 in Exeter.

The Galaxy Cheer squad also have a youth team of 11 members between six and 10-years-old who practice in Portskewett on Sundays. The junior team practice on Thursday evenings.
