A CRACKDOWN on vandals in areas of Newport is being welcomed by local councillors.

The move comes after 27 reported incidents of criminal damage on cars, houses and shops in the last week, in areas including Ringland, Lliswerry, Alway and St Julian’s.

Incidents include wing mirrors being damaged, car windows being smashed and shop and house windows being smashed by stones or other objects.

Alway and Maindee officers are patrolling the hotspot area looking for offenders and educating motorists and residents on ways in which they can prevent themselves from becoming a victim of crime.

Alway Sergeant, Gavin Torjesen said: “Sometimes there’s no real reason behind criminal damage – it’s often mindless acts by individuals but we want to advise residents and motorists to help them do as much as they can to prevent themselves from becoming a victim of crime.

“Our message to offenders is to be warned.

“If caught and found guilty of criminal damage they face a criminal record and a possible fine of up to £5000.

Allan Morris labour councillor for Lliswerry said: “We are absolutely delighted .

“It is good news for the many decent people who live in the area.

“We are not prepared to put up with any nonsense like drug dealing and antisocial behaviour-it will not be tolerated.

Debbie Harvey labour councillor for Alway said: “We have got a good team in Alway who are not putting up with anything.”
