A MONMOUTHSHIRE classroom was transformed into mission control as part of space camp week.

Year four pupils at Gilwern Primary School took part in a range of space-themed activities including learning about the first landing on the moon, the planets and stars as well as building their own rockets.

Year four teacher Brady Edwards said the main focus of the project was to develop the children's cross communication skills in literacy, numeracy and IT through science.

“The class was organised into mission groups and they wrote sci-fi stories and even their own space-themed music,” said Mrs Edwards.

“They have been working as a team and carried out a lot of research.”

School headteacher Roger Guy said the project has run annually since 2003.

“The children have been thoroughly enthusiastic in learning about all aspects of space and space travel,” he said.
