A SUCCESSFUL match in memory of a Pontypool sports coach raised more than £1,500.

The match, held at University of South Wales Caerleon Campus on February 28, was a huge success, raising money in memory of Dale Llewellyn.

Mr Llewellyn was a Pontypool sports coach who suddenly died aged 25 on January 2, 2013, following a blood clot.

The third and final memorial match between the University of South Wales and the UWN Old Boys was organised by friends of Mr Llewellyn.

More than 100 people turned out to watch the game, which was won by the Old Boys by just one point, bringing the score to 15-14.

A university friend of Dale Llewellyn, Rhys Bain, said money is still coming in.

All proceeds raised will be donated to the Special Care Baby Unit at the Royal Gwent Hospital, and the Welsh Air Ambulance, which has been selected by Mr Llewellyn’s family.

A minute’s silence was held at the game, and a fundraising raffle and auction was held on the evening at the campus.

Sponsors such as GoCompare and Gulzar Consultancy Firm donated cash and auction prizes including sporting memorabilia, and attended the event to show support.

Mr Llewellyn’s family supported the event, with his widow Rhiannon and their daughter, Grace – born after her father’s tragic death – present to watch the game.
