A FAMILY from Blackwood are calling on people to get involved with a charity walk to raise awareness and much needed funds for the Alzheimer’s Society.

The Dando family are planning the walk, which will be around 14 to 16 miles, on March 21 in aid of the charity after two members of their family suffered from the condition.

Bert Oliver died, aged 90, from heart-related problems on Christmas Day last year but had suffered from Alzheimer's while Allan Cooper died in February 2013 from the condition. He was in his early 70s.

The family, who started the walking event last year, hope it will now become an annual event.

The fundraiser will set off from Bargoed leisure centre and loop through Fochriw and Aberbargoed. It is hoped that the family-run event will raise £500 and help towards research and education.

Organiser Wendy Dando, daughter of Mr Oliver, said: “Having seen firsthand how big of an impact the disease has on a family, we decided to start an annual walk to help the work of the Alzheimer’s Society.

“It’s for future generations so that the knowledge is there to make living with the disease as easy as possible. Hopefully by raising funds one day we will be able to stop it at its source.

“Last year most of the family members made it all the way round, and we hope to emulate that success in coming years.”

Hiking socks and walking boots are the order of the day on March 21, with walkers of all ages taking part in the trek.

A bucket will also be used to collect donations along the route.
