The fire is now out

A spokeswoman for the sire service said the blaze was "deliberate". Around 14 hectares (34 acres) of grass and bracken were "well alight" which burned for three and a half hours.

Cwm resident of over 40 years, Marilyn Court, said: "It's quite well used by local people. "I think that the cause of the fire could be tied in with the eclipse as the sun was so bright this morning across the mountain."

Barrie Brean, who has lived in Cwm for over 35 years, said fires in the area are an annual occurrence. He said: "A lot of the time the fires are accidentally set my kids who do not realise the dangers of lighting fires so maybe more education is needed on the issue in schools. "It's a well used area by walkers, local people and bird watchers and for people who do use it, it must be pretty nasty to see it go up in flames."

Fire crews have requested a fourth fire engine and an Argocat vehicle due to multiple seats of fire on mountainside.

FIREFIGHTERS are tackling a blaze on Cwm mountain this morning.

Crews from Ebbw Vale, Abertillery and Aberbargoed are at the scene.

A spokeswoman for the fire service said they had received 30 999 calls about the blaze.
