ISLWYN MP Chris Evans has called for cross-party support for people with Down’s syndrome after the election.
At an event in Parliament, Mr Evans agreed to support the Down’s Syndrome Association in campaigning for the Government to recognise the Down Syndrome Health Book, provide direct funding for WorkFit and help local authorities identify all school pupils with Down’s.
One in every thousand people is born with Down’s. Nearly all have learning difficulties and behavioural issues, and conditions such as heart and thyroid problems are linked to it.
Mr Evans said: “With the right support they can lead fulfilling and independent lives. In fact, many adults with Down’s syndrome are in work. The ways to help people with Down’s syndrome are known and with the Down’s Syndrome Association’s election pledges, politicians from all parties have the chance to make these a reality.”
“I am pleased to say many of my colleagues in Parliament took this opportunity and pledged to deliver for people with Down’s syndrome.”
