A HEARTBROKEN son says a two-year jail sentence for a dangerous driver who caused the death of his father is "not severe enough".

Dale Brown, 24, added he had not been able to forgive Michael Smith for the loss of his father, David Brown.

Smith, 43, a salesman of Fowler Street, Wainfelin, Pontypool, was found guilty last month of causing the death by dangerous driving of Mr Brown, 52, from Abertillery.

The jury was told how Smith tried to overtake a car on the A472 Usk to Pontypool road at Little Mill on October 28, 2005.

But his LandRover Discovery smashed head-on into Mr Brown's van coming the other way. Mr Brown, an engineer with Coal Wood Gas Services in Rogerstone, died of multiple injuries.

The court heard that Smith had been using his mobile phone shortly before the crash, although this was not the primary aspect of the case.

Judge Philip Richards, sentencing Smith at Cardiff Crown Court yesterday (TUES), said: "Your driving fell far below what would be expected of a careful and confident driver.

"The law requires drivers to use care, consideration, concentration and patience. You demonstrated none of those qualities."

Dale Brown, of George Dagger Avenue, Abertillery, said after the sentencing: "Two years is not severe enough for taking a life."

The court heard that Smith's wife was expecting a child and that he was also the father of a toddler and an adopted daughter whose mother died in tragic circumstances days before the accident.

Mr Brown added: "I haven't forgiven him but this man has a young family and his wife is due to give birth.

"They did nothing wrong and are suffering because of his actions and I feel sorry for them. I've lost my father and now they've lost him.

"We'll never forget it but we can now move on and try to rebuild our lives."
