A JURY convicted a kebab shop worker of raping a woman in the Blackwood area after kidnapping her.

Cardiff Crown Court had heard how Gokhan Bozoglan, 29, posed as a taxi driver and targeted the woman after he spotted her looking for a cab after a night out with girlfriends.

Bozoglan, a Turkish national who had lived in various addresses in Newport, Cefn Fforest, Ammanford, Nelson and London, was convicted by majority verdicts of charges of rape and kidnapping.

Sentence was adjourned and he was remanded in custody.

Judge David Morris said he was considering ordering deportation after the sentence is served.

Prosecutor Ieuan Morris said the victim had been with friends in the Blackwood area and ordered a taxi to go home.

Bozoglan pulled up claiming to be a taxi driver and when she got in "to her horror" realised she had made a mistake as he drove off in the opposite direction to her home.

The court heard he raped her and later dropped her near the Bryn Meadows roundabout, crying and shaking uncontrollably. She flagged down a minibus.

The police later found the woman's mobile phone, which Bozoglan had taken, at an address in Hackney, London.

When arrested, Bozoglan said: "I've done nothing, I've been in London all week."

He claimed in evidence that the woman had undressed herself and him and carried out an indecent act.

Outside, he said she wanted to carry on being intimate but when he refused she became "verbally violent".
