CAMPAIGNERS are starting a petition to make a "dangerous" Gwent street safe.

This website reported yesterday how 22-year-old Rebecca Brain was pinned against a wall by the back of a car that "lost control" and crashed.

The worker in Newport's Patent Office said she was lucky to be alive after the Vauxhall Astra travelling south through Islwyn Road, Wattsville, spun 180 degrees, mounted the pavement and pinned her against the wall.

She suffered torn knee ligaments and is now on crutches.

Her father Rob, 61, has joined residents in their fight to have road humps.

He has lived in the area for 25 years and said the main road had always been a problem.

"There were protests here a couple of years ago on the crossings," he said. "People were stopping traffic so children could cross the roads. We want 'sleeping policemen' and more measures."

Resident Stephen Martin, 50, saw the collision and said it was the last straw.

"We have had the flashing 30mph signs and other things but the only thing that will work is sleeping policemen."

The petition was launched yesterday(WED) and can be found at the Islwyn Road post office, Wattsville and Nashville Club, and the Bethel Baptist Chapel.

"I will leave petitions around the community and go door to door to get peoples' opinions. It's time something was done. This week's accident has to be the last. People are petrified to cross even with the traffic lights."

Mr Martin said the campaigners will consider closing the roads in protest to allow schoolchildren to cross in the mornings and evening.

A council spokesman said it introduced traffic-calming measures "appropriate for this type of road classification", including rumble strips, red surfacing and chicanes, five years ago.

But he added: "We are aware of the recent accident and will review the situation in light of this."
