A hedging match held at New House Farm, Newcastle, saw 19 competitors taking part in competitions with six teams entering the wire fencing class.

In the hedging, there was strong competition in the Beginners Class with nine competitors taking part following the training day held at Home Farm, the Hendre the previous week.

Champion hedger was Graham Smith of Cwmyoy.

The wire fencing classes were also well supported with teams travelling from as far as Aberdare.

Results of hedging classes: Class 1 Monmouthshire Style - Open: 1st prize & winner of Crwys Perpetual Challenge Cup Adrian Smith (Dingestow); 2nd Phil Bowen (Newcastle), 3rd Steve Jones (Newcastle). Class 2 Any Other Style - Open: 1st Graham Smith (Cwmyoy); 2nd Elwyn Davies (Talgarth), 3rd Peter Hopkins (Monmouth). Class 3 Novice Class - Any Style: 1st Bryan Bayliss (Whitecastle); 2nd Stuart Phillips (Welsh Newton Common), 3rd Steve Bevan (Newcastle). Class 4 Beginners Class: 1st prize & winner of Dave Jones Perpetual Challenge Cup Gethin Jones; 2nd Simon Farrow (Builth Wells); 3rd Steve Wilkes (Welsh Newton Common).

Class 5 Young Farmers 1st Ben Pritchard.

The society's next event will be a Race Night at Cross Ash Village Hall on Friday, April 20.
