MONMOUTHSHIRE’S finest chefs will be showing off their skills at a food festival in Caldicot next month.

Kyle Wilson, the head chef at Sawyers Bar and Grill in Magor, will be among those at Monmouthshire Food Festival at Caldicot Castle on the weekend of May 30 and May 31 - with anticipation building around the event.

Mr Wilson, who started working in kitchens at 14 and is now 23, has an ever growing reputation. But he said it is well-earned.

He told the Free Press: “I started off as a pot washer. You have got to put the hours in. It’s not about knowing people; it’s about impressing people.”

The festival is in its second year after a first celebration of the county’s produce was held last October.

Its organiser Charlotte Greig said the event was about promoting Monmouthshire as a county, focusing on its best food and drink production.

She said: “I want to promote this area. Monmouthshire as a whole is fantastic.”

Other chefs who will be in the festival’s cookery demonstration theatre over the weekend will include The Piercefield’s head chef Colin Carter. Chefs from the St Pierre Marriot Golf and Country Club will also be hosting a BBQ Corner in the castle.
