SCHOOLCHILDREN in Pontypool have donated nearly 1,000 paintings and drawings to a World Record Attempt to create the longest landscape for charity.

West Monmouth School, New Inn Primary and Penygarn Primary pupils have been busy creating the landscapes to help project organiser Steve Knapik in his attempt.

The project is raising money for children's charity Blue Balloon, which gives children personal and financial support.

Head of art at West Monmouth School Liane McNeil said: "The pupils were really up for the challenge. They were so excited and to to think their work is going to be displayed in the Millennium Centre.

"It's also educational, they've learnt about landscape and perspective. They could do anything, they could do it from observing or they could just imagine something."

Pupils also raised £500 with an own clothes day for Blue Balloon, which was also presented to Mr Knapik.

Ms McNeil added: "They were so engaged when hearing about where the money they had raised is going to, they looked really grateful that they were involved."

The charity hopes to create a five-mile long landscape consisting of around 27,000 A4 pieces of paper to break the current Guinness World Record.

They will be displayed at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff at some point next year.
