SOUTH Wales Fire and Rescue Service staff started their 290 mile cycle yesterday in aid of the Fire Fighters Charity.

The 16 members of staff led by chief fire officer Huw Jakeway, are taking part in the Chief's Peloton. They will be cycling to 48 fire stations over four days and hope to raise £2,000 for the Fire Fighters Charity.

The team cycled from the SWFRS HQ in Llantrisant yesterday covering more than 80 miles to finish at Monmouth Fire Station. Day two of the ride will start today in Monmouth and will end at Ebbw Vale Fire Station.

The group will be visiting 11 stations during this stage including Blaenavon, Abercarn and Risca. They will be tackling 73 miles tomorrow and a further 57 miles on Wednesday.

Huw Jakeway, chief fire officer, said: “I want to say a massive thank you to those members of staff who have trained hard, raised money and have volunteered to take on this peloton challenge. Your support is greatly appreciated, as is the technical on-hand expertise of the team from Changing Gearz.

“Over 290 miles to cover and all 48 stations visited. I think it’s vital because each of our stations play an essential role in our communities to raise awareness and reduce risk and I look forward to having a catch up with those Firefighters on station during the ride.”

The ride will also be raising awareness of the White Ribbon Campaign. The SWFRS is the only UK Fire Brigade to be accredited in its commitment to preventing violence against women and girls.

Technical support is being provided by Torfaen based business Changing Gearz who will be following the group to ensure their bikes are fit for the road.
