A NEWPORT man will follow rugby star Shane Williams through Patagonia to raise money for Velindre Cancer Centre.

Freelance music composer Adam Harvey, 31, is set to take part in a six day hike across Patagonia to raise money for Velindre Cancer Centre.

He will embark on the six day trek this November and will be led in his group of 25 by Welsh rugby legend Shane Williams.

A separate group of 50 will also be led by comedian Rhod Gilbert.

Mr Harvey has chosen to raise money for Velindre Cancer Centre, as they looked after his mother, Lesley Harvey, who was diagnosed with kidney cancer in 2006.

He said: “They were brilliant with my mum whenever I went with her to the hospital.”

After having the kidney removed, five years later the family received the news that the cancer had returned in lymph nodes in her chest, which she is still receiving chemotherapy treatment for.

Mrs Harvey, 54, said: “Staff at Velindre are lovely and always on hand for advice so I was very proud of Adam when he said he would be fundraising for them.

“I have got involved in helping him fundraising so I hope that we can raise as much money as possible.”

Ahead of the hike, Mr Harvey has been preparing by walking in the Brecon Beacons with others who are taking part in the event, and feels like he’s is on the right path.

But he has admitted that he is nervous. He said: “It’s the biggest challenge I have ever done.”

Velindre Cancer Centre is situated in Cardiff, and specialise in cancer treatment for patients.

He has currently raised a total of £1,330 online so far but needs to reach at least £6000.

He plans to do bucket collections in supermarkets, and at the Big Splash Festival in Newport.
