STAFF from a Newport care home donned Harry Potter outfits and collectively walked the distance of a marathon yesterday - to raise money for orphans in Belarus.

Seventeen members of staff from New Bridges Residential Care Home on Bassaleg Road, Newport, completed just over a mile and a half each of the mammoth 26 mile distance at Tredegar Park.

Director of Quality at the Care Home, Tina Donovan, helped to organise the event to raise money for charity Leaves of Hope which sends young people to Belarus to work in orphanages and children’s hospitals.

Ms Donovan, who is the Chair of Leaves of Hope, visited Belarus in 2013 and said she was shocked by the number of orphans the country has.

Leaves of Hope offers decorating projects where young people help to brighten the children’s environment with murals. The charity also helps with a play scheme where the team teaches the orphans and their teachers on how to play.

Ms Donovan decided to organise the charity walk with the wizarding theme because “some of the staff are Harry Potter fanatics”, she said.

The team hope to raise more than £1,000 for the charity. New Bridges is a specialist residential and outreach service provider for individuals who have had a brain injury, complex needs or learning disability.
