NEWPORT’S growing brewery Tiny Rebel said it is looking into opening a permanent bar in the city after a campaign was launched to keep its pop-up shop open.

Brothers-in-law and founders of Tiny Rebel, Bradley Cummings and Gareth Williams, opened Urban Tap House in the front entrance of Newport Market on May 1 – but for one month only.

The pop-up bar, which already has a permanent site in Cardiff, is due to shut its doors next Sunday, May 31, but an online campaign has been launched to keep it open.

Keen photographer John Burns, from Newport, created the montage above as part of the social media campaign called #UrbanTapStay.

He said: “I have been a Newport boy all my life and have seen it go through awful times.

“But the bar seems to be very positive and vibrant and seems to fit in with what people want. It’s captured the imagination of all sorts of people in Newport, showing how Newport is re-surging and getting better.

“I just hope it stays. I think it will.”

Mr Cummings, a Newport boy himself and one of the brewery’s founders, said: "“There’s a few issues we need to overcome and make it into a full workable plan. We’d be looking into running it permanently."

He added: "If we can overcome the obstacles we will definitely keep it open”.

Responding to the campaign which started on Thursday [21], Mr Cummings said: “I just can’t quite describe it. It’s great people really want to keep it open.

“It’s very positive, a massive compliment to what we have been trying to do”.

He said the brewery will still have to shut on May 31 but, if all goes well, the team will reopen after a full refurbishment.

Mr Cummings said the feedback has been amazing and expects business is going to "drive even more with Friar's Walk kicking off".

The Urban Tap House bar specialise in homemade pizzas and all ingredients are bought from businesses within Newport Market. Pizzas and beers are available to takeaway.

It is the only bar in the city to sell specialist beers in 1/3 pint measurements and it only sells beers and ciders made by the Tiny Rebel brewery.

So far it has hosted event nights including Digital Tuesdays, an evening discussing social media.

The image which launched the social media campaign, led by Mr Burns, has been retweeted 33 times and has 26 favourites.
