DEMOLITION has begun on the first of two blocks of flats in Ringland, Newport – marking the end of an era for the run-down buildings.

The two vacant blocks at 129-144 Ringland Circle and 57-86 Cot Farm Circle have been earmarked for demolition by Newport City Homes since last year.

After the 1960s homes were transferred to Newport City Homes from Newport City Council five years ago, the housing association carried out an extensive stock condition survey and found the two blocks in Ringland were no longer fit for purpose.

No immediate plans for the site after demolition have been made but Newport City Homes will be consulting with residents in the near future.

Regeneration co-ordinator at Newport City Homes Solitaire Pritchard said: “It’s all going as planned and on schedule.

“We would like to thank residents and the community, they have been great in supporting us with this work.”

The 32 maisonettes were home to 24 residents, who have now been rehomed.

Walters Demolition began work at Cot Farm Circle two weeks ago to make them safe before demolition could begin.

The company are working to minimise disruption for residents and businesses while work is carried out, however there will be vehicles in and out of the site and some works will create dust.

The Walters Group will have dust suppression units on site to reduce airborne dust generated from demolition and will control working hours.

The company has reminded parents to make their children aware of the dangers of entering a demolition and construction site and asks that residents report any damage or unauthorised access to the team.

A team from Newport City Homes also visited children at Milton Primary School earlier this month with the Walters Group to help them learn about being safe around building sites.
